WROSTJA (Meetings of One Actor Theatres in Wrocław) is the oldest solo-performance festival in the world, organized in Wrocław since 1966. In 2000 it became an international event. During its course the best of Polish one actor theatres have an opportunity to confront guest performances from all over the world. Thanks to the initiative of WROSTJA’s organizers, multiple one actor theatre festivals have taken place in Lower Silesia, in Toruń, and in Warsaw. In total, 91 meetings and festivals of one actor theatres were organized between 1966 and 2010; they consisted of 700 actors from 28 different countries producing 1079 shows.
Typically, the festival is held under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Marshal of Lower Silesia, and the President of the City of Wrocław. Since 2009 the UNESCO International Theatrical Institute – already a supporter of the European Centre of One Actor Theatres set in Wrocław – will be granted honorary patronage over the festival. The Society of the Friends of Theatre in Wrocław, as well as the Culture and Art Centre in Wrocław issue a series of books known as “BLACK BOOK WITH HAMLET” including works related to one actor theatre and presentations of prominent polish and foreign actors.
Meetings with One Actor Theatres – besides WROSTJA – consist of the following:
* OFTJA – Polish Festival of One Actor Theatres – a competition mainly for young Polish actors. During this event the performances staged in Poland in the last theatrical season are shown. The performances awarded by the jury are always recommended to cultural institutions, artistic agencies and the directors of international One Actor Theatres Festivals.
* The presentations of monodramas prepared by the professors as well as study-performances by the students of the National Theatre University in Wrocław.
* The presentations of solo-performances in 8-10 towns in Lower Silesia.
